RYERSON ENGINEERS! Show your pride and join us as we say thank you to the RESS execs for being role models at the 2nd annual What Makes A Man conference!

The Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign wishes to acknowledge the Ryerson Engineering Student Society for their leadership and role modelling during the course of the 2011-2012 academic year at Ryerson U with a ‘White Ribbon Champion’ award.

The ‘White Ribbon Champion’ award is presented to a group that works to create and nurture a gender-equitable campus for the Ryerson community to work, live and study.  When someone vandalized a Women in Engineering poster in the George Vari building, RESS was quick to speak out via social media and condemn the act. RESS VP Communications Natasha Niznik said “Engineers are supposed to hold certain morals and a thirst for justice. It goes hand in hand with the responsibility we are given by society.”

Ryerson male engineering students rallied to show support of RESS VP External Jolene Funk, who spoke at the annual December 6th Memorial, with a surprise gift of flowers and a note.

The note reads: On this day in 1989, a terrible act took place  because of ignorance and intolerance. We can never understand the way you feel, but we can instead try to educate those around us and create tolerance, acceptance, and understanding within the engineering community. We can put a stop to negative attitudes and discrimination to ensure that nothing this horrible ever happens again. We will continue to promote the best our community can be through action, attitude and example so that everyone feels comfortable and welcome in engineering at Ryerson.

Sincerely,  The M.I.E. (Men in Engineering)”

Jolene Funk will be on hand to accept the award and deliver a short talk on what makes for a good engineer at our discussion-focused event. Check out the program for the conference for details and to see the other amazing speakers joining us! We look forward to seeing proud Ryerson Engineering students out to join us!

In October 2011, Canadian Muslim Imams, groups and leaders took steps with a statement called the  “Call to Action to Eradicate Domestic Violence”. It ends by stating “As Muslims and as Canadians, we stand with all Canadians and pledge to combat domestic violence in all its manifestations, wherever and whenever they arise.”

Afaun Mandol, a spokesperson for Muslim Presence Toronto has been working to spread the conversation. In an article in Iqra.ca Mandol says “We are hoping to raise awareness about domestic violence in Canada with the White Ribbon Days…the White Ribbon Campaign is a means to start the conversation in our community to challenge everyone to speak out, and think about their own personal beliefs, language and actions”.

Join us to hear Afaun at the 2nd annual ‘What Makes A Man’ White Ribbon Conference.

Read an article written about this effort by Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign’s Jeff Perera

Afaun Mandol is a community activist who is a Communications Director with the Muslim Presence Network, a collective of social activists who seek to promote universal values and active citizenship.

Afaun has led the network’s Charter for Compassion initiative in Toronto. The Charter for Compassion is a world-wide movement started by Karen Armstrong and supported by leading thinkers from many traditions; the Charter activates the Golden Rule around the world.

He is a promoter of the Arts and has spent 8 years volunteering with MuslimFest, the largest annual Islamic Arts and Entertainment festival in Canada. He has also organized the Rising Talent program at Reviving the Islamic Spirit Conference.

Afaun currently works as an IT Manager and volunteers with charities in and around the city including Toronto Food Bank, Yonge Street Mission – Evergreen Centre, and Heart and Stroke’s Big Bike Ride.

Shihan returns to Ryerson University and Toronto, Canada!

So what will Shihan be doing at the 2nd annual What Makes A Man 2012 White Ribbon Conference?

Shihan will be hanging out with us all day joining in discussions and performing during the conference before delivering the electrifying & interactive keynote performance! To get a taste of what awaits, check out this video by Lovehard from the first time Shihan Van Clief joined Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign’s Jeff Perera at a UHHU event in Jan 2011.

ABOUT THE WHAT MAKES A MAN CONFERENCE

‘What Makes A Man. Higher Unlearning: The 2012 White Ribbon Conference’  is a discussion-focused conference looking at the spectrum of identities, experiences and realities that determine ‘What Makes a Man’. It will be more of an ‘anti-conference’ as speakers are invited to complete the statement ‘what makes a man’ with a 5 minute casual talk (not an academic lecture) that sparks dialogue and conversation. Our facilitator then includes the audience in further dialogue for 15-20 minutes.  We have invited speakers who’s voice will provide great contributions to a casual discussion of how manhood, masculinity and gender are created and enforced in society.

ABOUT SHIHAN

Shihan grew up in New York’s Lower East Side and began his writing career in 1989, which he used to get a scholarship to Williston North Hampton School for Creative Writing. After signing with MGA Records in 1993, Shihan wrote for the video game NBA Jam Session series and the theme for Reebok’s “Blacktop” campaign. The first poet to be named iTunes “Download of the week,” Shihan was also a part of the writing and performing for MTV’s Rock the Vote campaign and Schoolhouse Rocks videos.

Come see Britta B perform at the 2nd annual White Ribbon Conference at Ryerson University!

Britta “Britta B.” Badour is a fearless young woman and poet now residing in Toronto, Canada. Writing poetry ever since she learned to spell her name, Britta believes that sharing her art is the best way to be honest and informative about the issues she is most passionate about. When she was younger, Britta found herself trapped without a voice to speak out against the troubles she was facing both at home and at school. She expresses herself through poetry, hoping to be the role model she never had growing up.

Britta has travelled across North America as a keynote motivational speaker, speaking to thousands of people about the power of how “using your voice can change the world.” In 2010, she spent the summer building a school in Kenya, Africa. Most recently, Britta featured at the Nuyorican Cafe, in New York City, as a showcase opener for HBO’s Def Poetry superstar Carlos Andrés Gómez. This May, she will be featured in her first headliner at Mike Geffner’s Inspired Word showcase, in Manhattan, New York.

She is a leader, youth activist, and a woman with words.
