Join us as Alan Sears presents McClungs Magazine with a special
‘White Ribbon Champion’ award for 20 years of working toward change!

We are excited to have Ryerson’s Alan Sears deliver a talk and present McClung’s Magazine with a special acknowledgement on reaching their 20th anniversary. McClung’s is a feminist magazine based out of Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada that publishes twice a year (in January and in April) and is largely student-produced. McClungs started as a photocopied magazine 19 years ago. Along the way the magazine has won a Canadian Association of Journalists award. “We reflect our readers–who are interested in eclectic, wild, weird and wonderful pop culture, politics, news and social issues from Toronto and around the world. We give our readers stories about people they can’t find anywhere else.”

We humbly say thank you to the McClungs Magazine family with a special ‘White Ribbon Champion’ award for working towards making Ryerson a more gender-equitable space to work, live and study.

Delivering a talk and presenting the award will be Ryerson University’s Alan Sears. Alan teaches Sociology at Ryerson University and is a long-time activist in queer and radical movements. He has written about queer movements, AIDS/HIV, the education system, work and radical renewal.

It is disproportionately young men who carry out this brutalization, so full liberation means challenging the particular kinds of masculinity that promote violence against both women and those perceived as “queers” says Alan in his article ’30 Years On: The Toronto Bathhouse Raids and Sexual and Gender Liberation’  in the New Socialist Webzine

We are excited to have the Slutwalk TO team at WMAM 2012 ‘Higher Unlearning’!
Join us for a conversation with Heather Jarvis and the SlutWalk TO team at the 2nd annual White Ribbon Conference!

Heather Jarvis is a queer, sex- and body-positive feminist. With experience in women and gender studies, social work and community activism she was furious upon hearing a representative of the police slut-shame survivors and people at risk of sexual assault. Not entirely shocked by the incident, Jarvis believes we should be beyond the myths of people ‘asking’ or ‘deserving’ to be assaulted due to their behaviour or appearance. As a survivor and advocate for empowerment, Jarvis constantly aims to shed shame around sex and sexuality. She feels we deserve safe streets and a supportive justice system.  Described as an eternal optimist by some who know her, Heather Jarvis refuses to believe things cannot change. She is determined to continuously work on improving this world through increased respect, consent, understanding and acceptance.

Slutwalk Toronto asks you to join them in their mission to spread the word that those those who experience sexual assault are not the ones at fault, without exception.
