RYERSON ENGINEERS! Show your pride and join us as we say thank you to the RESS execs for being role models at the 2nd annual What Makes A Man conference!

The Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign wishes to acknowledge the Ryerson Engineering Student Society for their leadership and role modelling during the course of the 2011-2012 academic year at Ryerson U with a ‘White Ribbon Champion’ award.

The ‘White Ribbon Champion’ award is presented to a group that works to create and nurture a gender-equitable campus for the Ryerson community to work, live and study.  When someone vandalized a Women in Engineering poster in the George Vari building, RESS was quick to speak out via social media and condemn the act. RESS VP Communications Natasha Niznik said “Engineers are supposed to hold certain morals and a thirst for justice. It goes hand in hand with the responsibility we are given by society.”

Ryerson male engineering students rallied to show support of RESS VP External Jolene Funk, who spoke at the annual December 6th Memorial, with a surprise gift of flowers and a note.

The note reads: On this day in 1989, a terrible act took place  because of ignorance and intolerance. We can never understand the way you feel, but we can instead try to educate those around us and create tolerance, acceptance, and understanding within the engineering community. We can put a stop to negative attitudes and discrimination to ensure that nothing this horrible ever happens again. We will continue to promote the best our community can be through action, attitude and example so that everyone feels comfortable and welcome in engineering at Ryerson.

Sincerely,  The M.I.E. (Men in Engineering)”

Jolene Funk will be on hand to accept the award and deliver a short talk on what makes for a good engineer at our discussion-focused event. Check out the program for the conference for details and to see the other amazing speakers joining us! We look forward to seeing proud Ryerson Engineering students out to join us!
